New York Governor Signs Patient Safety Bill Into Law
On August 1, 2013, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law A.878-a (Bronson)/S.697-a (Grisanti), which requires Central Service technicians to become certified and undergo continuing education credits. CS technicians play a most important role in the delivery of patient care. These professionals are responsible for ensuring that instrumentation and equipment used in medical and surgical procedures are properly cleaned, disinfected, inspected, and sterilized prior to patient use. The bill goes into effect January 1, 2015.

Managing Steam Sterilization Process

This Fellowship paper addresses the intricacies of the steam sterilization process, the evolution of steam sterilization technology, and the factors that affect the steam sterilization process. These factors include steam quality, water quality, inadequate cleaning, incorrect assembly of instrument trays, incorrect use of packaging, and/or incorrect loading of sterilization carriers. These factors become evident when wet packs, discoloration of instruments and stains on sterilizer packaging are identified. This paper also addresses effective resolution strategies for the aforementioned steam sterilization-related challenges.
