Professional Certification (Education)

IAHCSMM's certification programs are the most highly recognized for quality and thoroughness within the healthcare industry. To keep advancing in your career, take advantage of one of our Correspondence Certification Courses, offered in conjunction with Purdue University, or purchase Boxed Course Materials, where training is brought to your doorstep and you can study at your own pace. These courses mirror the content of each certification course. Upon completion of either the Purdue Correspondence Course or the self study Boxed Course, you will be prepared to take a certification examination for one of the following:

Professional Certification (Examination)

Now completing the last step to obtain your certification is easier than ever. IAHCSMM has partnered with Prometric/Thomson Sylvan Learning Centers, a leading computer based testing and assessment service provider, to offer convenient examinations for all IAHCSMM certification tests. There are no annual exam dates; you can schedule your exam when it is convenient for you, seven days a week. The test is computer based, so no writing instruments or proctors are needed. A tutorial describing how to "take the exam on a computer" precedes each examination, and though optional, it is highly recommended (time spent reviewing the tutorial does not count against your allotted testing time). The partnership with IAHCSMM and Prometric helps to improve test accuracy and speed reporting. Most importantly, this joint venture allows IAHCSMM to offer the only secure examination process for the central service field.

Examinations are offered at all authorized Prometric/Thomson Sylvan Learning Centers, providing more than 300 sites across the U.S. Upon receipt of your application for examination, taking an exam is based on the ease of finding time within your own schedule. You are permitted 90 days to schedule and take your examination, at any time and on any day. When you schedule an exam, a Prometric representative will help you find a testing site closest to your location, and will assist you with availability of appointments. Scheduling of exams can also be completed online by visiting www.2test.com.

Alternative Certification

IAHCSMM recognizes certification from other organizations, without the need for re-testing. In order to promote ongoing quality and maintain the standards and integrity of the profession, IAHCSMM requires that those wishing to transfer their certification meet specific criteria. To be considered, applicants must complete all four sections of the application:

  • Section One: Proof of Certification with another association (current and non-expired)
  • Section Two: Verification of 400 hours of "hands-on" experience
  • Section Three: Proof of 12 contact hours of continuing education in the past 12 months
  • Section Four: Supervisor verification

Provisional Certification

For those in the process of accumulating the necessary 400 hours of hands-on experience or are currently seeking employment within a Central Service Department that requires technician certification, IAHCSMM offers Provisional Certification.

Applicants opting Provisional Certification are granted a six month waiver for submitting proof of hands-on experience, and are permitted to sit for the exam. Once certified, the technician has up to six (6) months to notify IAHCSMM with current employment and supervisor information, and verification of the complete 400 hours of hands-on experience (categorized by specific sections as indicated on the application). Failure to provide IAHCSMM with all necessary information within six months of passing the exam will nullify the certification, and the exam process must be repeated.
