IAHCSMM in Taiwan

Many of you who attended the Annual Meeting in Atlanta had the pleasure of meeting Alice Kuo and Sharon Tseng. Alice and Sharon are CS professionals from St. Martin de Porres Hospital in Chia-yi City, Taiwan. Alice has been very active in pursuing education, certification and chapter development in Taiwan and invited IAHCSMM to participate in the first ever cs seminars in Taiwan, held August 27th & 28th.
It was my honor to speak about IAHCSMM’s educational seminars and materials at two seminars with 400 total attendees. I would say these first time efforts were quite successful!

Taiwan has many high-tech hospitals; there are six teaching hospitals in Taipei alone. What they are missing is structured education and recognition through certification for their many cs professionals. Everyone I met is eager for education and the networking opportunities that chapter membership can provide. Since my return home, the new Taiwan Chapter of IAHCSMM has elected officers, developed bylaws and applied for provisional chapter status.

I was able to visit three hospitals and tour the operating room at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei. CGMH is a 3000-bed facility with 60 operating rooms. The day of our tour 58 of the 60 rooms were in use. We appreciated the staff taking time from their very busy schedule to show us their processes.

I do have to admit, my trip was not all work! I was able to travel from Taipei to Chia-yi on the high-speed train; I became an MRT (subway) system expert; I ate some very “interesting” food; I went to a tea garden in the mountains and that is just a sampling of what we did in my five days in the country.

As interesting as it was to visit hospitals and present about IAHCSMM, the thing I appreciate most is the kindness, good humor and hospitality of all the people I met. It is a big world…and a very small one at the same time.
