I thought I had read "somewhere" that there should be roughly 2 inches of space between the item, and the seals or edges of the steri when it is packaged.

Our OR requested smaller packages for certain items due to storage issues. Our new tech was scolded today and told to use the "smallest" steri possible for this reason. This was the first I was aware of this new practice.

If I could remember where I might have read about this it would be alot easier. We definitely are going to get a refresher inservice soon.

Thanks!

AAMI indicates in section 8.3.4 (figure 8) regarding peel packs, to orient instruments in the packs according to the health care's policies and procedures.
We advise 1" spacing from the item to the sealed edge. Because of bulk some items may require more space, some less.
In other words, enough spacing to assure the instrument package can be sterilized, transported, stored and opened at point of use without compromising sterility.

One more item, peel pouches should be oriented in the vertical position for sterilization.

in relatoin to peel pouches, our heat sealer tends to "melt" the tyvec and the plastic together. (even though we turn down the heat) I had a tech ask me if these seals are considered acceptable. The company indicated they were as long as there was no break to allow bacteria to penetrate, but added tha tif we were not following mfg. recommendations for temp and time, then we may not be in compliance with governing bodies such as Joint Commission or DOH. Sounds like a catch 22 to me. What would be some opinions out there as far as the acceptability of this "melted" seal? (we do use self seal most of the time, but "ran out") Thanks ahead of time!
