We are looking into making policies about quick turn-around times for our instrumentation that the OR needs back sterile ASAP. Currently we are trying a time frame of 3 and 4 hours, depending on the tray. We are attempting to make a solid policy so as to avoid flashing unless it's an emergency, as it's supposed to be used. Any suggestions before we set our policy in stone? What do other hospitals do? Thanks, CT

At our facility we have a "Priority Process" sheet that accompanies sets or pieces requiring quick turnaround, which must include the time needed again, where to deliver it to, and OR's preferred method of resterilizing (We do it, or they flash). When we receive this notification in decon we expedite those pieces to the front of the line, and if needed run them through the washer on a quick cycle (same wash and lubrication, but no dry time), and then prepare for either sterilization or flash. With this method, the turnaround time is under 3 hours with sterilization, and under 1 hour if flashing.
