Hi,
I have a Thompson Retractor set that weighs 28 pounds. Do I need to increase the sterilization times or separate the set into 17pound each?
There is one piece that has a time of 10minutes, so I would do all the set for 10mins. The manufacturer says 4minute cycle is o.k. but knowing that weight is a factor how do I know what time to use?

The key is steam contact to all surfaces. Contact means the steam condenses, giving up energy to heat the load and thus creates condensation. AAMI ST77 and ST79 have 25 lbs as the standard including the container, but less is always better from a drying prospective. If the device Mfg recommends a 10 minute exposure time, then follow their instructions. Lacking instructions, steam contact is the key. Complex devices may require extended times but the weight would not necessarily be the driver if steam can contact all surfaces.
