Does anyone know the reccomendation on holes in mayo trays? I thought they should have holes. The hospital I work at the Supervisor says no. Any information and paperwork would help greatly. Thanks Trichia

Tricia,

Whether or not the mayo tray should have holes in it depends on how it is being used.
If it is being sterilized for use in the O.R. (is wrapped properly and placed on an angle to permit drainage and avoid the trapping of air) then no holes is no problem. If it is being used as a tray to contain instruments which are then sterilized (and the tray is placed flat on the surface of the autoclave cart, then you have a problem) We use large mayo trays (no holes) to hold O.R.'s T & A ( tonsil and adenectomy) instruments. However, when they are placed on the autoclave cart they are always placed either at a steep angle or they are inverted with the bottom of the tray facing up. Hope this helps.
