This was just posted in the last few days on another service AHA provides.
This topic of how long we should keep records apears ever now and then in our topics.

The American Health Information Management Association has released guidelines for defining the legal health record for disclosure purposes. The guidelines note that each organization must define the content of the legal health record to best fit its system capabilities and legal environment. “Unfortunately there is no one-size-fits-all definition, as the laws and regulations governing the content vary by practice setting and state,” said Julie McQueary, who co-chaired the AHIMA work group that developed the guidelines. “However, there are common principles that can be followed in creating a definition.”

It is general but is very helful and gives direction on the subject. As we have talked about before . It is hospital and state specific but this gives some very good guidelines .
