Does anyone require scrub techs to hand wash their own instruments when cases are over? Heard some discussion of this and was wondering how it works.

AORN recommended practices (RP) under the care of instruments section section 4 and 5 reads instrument cleaning should begin at the point of use or as soon as possible with all instruments cleared of debris and/or pretreated with an enzyme liquid or spray before sending to CSSD. Our hospital OR department policy states this in writing and OR manager backs us up if we receive a case that hasn't been pre processed by scrub techs correctly.
This makes sense not only for best practices but also for instrument longevity ($$$) reasons.

Our O.R. scrub techs are required to deliver used instruments to decontam, hand wash and run them thru the automatic washer / decontaminator during SPD off hours. Do "they" always follow our policies and guidelines? Don't know...none of us are here when they do it. I often wonder if they really don all the protective equipment.

Shirleen what about during regular SPD hours? Are the scrubs doing the handwash then or do you have dedicated spd people who do it?
Thanks for all the input everyone.
