:D For those of you who were at the Cleveland meeting, as you know there is much concern with the various sterilization parameters for the Orthopaedic Joint Vendors.
From what I heard, Depuy and Stryker were the two varied vendors that ranged from exposure time of 15-40 minutes.
GOOD NEWS!!!!! I spoke with, and received a printout from all vendors, including Stryker and Depuy with exposure times as follows:
STRYKER ORTHOPEDICS-4 to 15 minute exposure/30 min dry-Barry Kelley @ 201-831-5284.
DEPUY ORTHOPEDICS-8 minute exposure/20 minute dry- Ed Arscott/ 1-800-ISDEPUY.
AS PER THESE VENDORS THIS NEW RECOMMENDATION IS HOT OFF THE PRESS AND HAS BEEN VALIDATED!
HOPE THIS HELPS- PLEASE SHARE WITH OUR COLLEAGUES AROUND THE STATES!

There is a range of exposure times related to the packaging of custom orthopedic sets, i.e. whether the trays are metal (aluminum) or plastic and if there are multiple levels to the set. Try to determine which trays are included in the recommended shorter exposure times. From my understanding the layered plastic trays especially in those manufactured from plastic materials were recommended for the longest exposure times. Single level aluminum trays had recopmmendations for reduced times.

This is in response to questions at the IAHCSMM Cleveland Meeting.
In researching this topic. I was looking for sterilization times. I found this great new document.
Smith and Nephew has come out with new guidelines for cleaning and Sterilization. It is dated 5/05.
I have put the link for everybody to go to. After you go to the link then down load the information. Please read it completely.

They are very detailed in the cleaning area. The most I have ever seen.
They give very detailed instrustions on cleaning . Check out the sonic cleaning . Test your equipment. This is from an instrument company. It is also important to know they make a difference between devices with and without design challend . They make it very clear on how items should be handled. They talk about reamers seperatly. Also look at the timess for automatic cleaning.
They do a great job in outlining what needs to be done. This is the most complete document from a company I have seen. In falls in line with the the standards in AAMI TIR 12. They talk of water quality " hardness", the type of detergent...
They have a section on verifying cleaning.
This is a now a company plug for Healthmark. For lumens items they recommend checking them. We have the ony product that allows you to check lumes quickly. the HemoCheck that is ready made.
They give Sterilization times in the document.
My advice is maybe members should look at the AAMI container document and see the companies that are on the committe and contact them( both the sterilizer and the instrument companies). Share with them your input on this topic of sterilization times and other issues.
This document tells me companies are listening and trying to give users information they need to clean and sterilzer items properly.
This is what users have been asking for. How do I clean how do I sterilizer.

Well I have sterilization guidelines from Depuy - received them this past Friday after attending the Cleveland meeting - and they give two sterilization processes.
1st guideline - sterilize trays that are all metal and those that are metal and poly for the 8 mins/20 mins. drying.
2nd guideline- sterilize trays that are all poly for forty-five minutes. Why didn't they provide you with that information.

DePuy recommends sterilizing its' poly trays for 45 minutes. Why wasn't this mentioned to the cpguy?

Did these companies provide the exposure time if any of these trays are sterilized using the "unwrapped" method (flash).
