Hi group
I have been following this list serv and feel you are the group to help me with my Sterile Processing woes.
I am a director of surgical services but don't hold that against me:( .
I have worked in SPD since getting out of high school but I am just stumped now with how to turn our very important department around.
Our department is very small and very busy. we have trouble hiring and keeping good people and it is getting worse. The staff that have been there are getting really frustrated, the docs and OR staff are frustrated and we have to improve. We currently are budgeted for 10FTEs and do primarily instrument processing and no CS
What I would like to know is

do you assign staff daily to different areas i.e decontam,prep/pack
do your lead workers make assignments or supervisor
how do you educate on traffic issues between decontam and assembly
do you measure any kind of productivity like sets assembled or something like that

As you can see we are really having issues and we have neuro, cardiac and total joints to train staff on and process daily. I won't be able to hire a consultant so am hoping the collective wisdom here can give me some points for improvement. I appreciate people taking the time to answer and will check the list serve regularly
thanks
