I am looking for information from anyone who has experience using the V.Mueller Genesis sterilization containers. Specifically, does anyone use them for flash sterilization?

We have used Genesis containers and I don't believe they are meant for flash. There are closed systems that are made just for flash sterilizing. Check with V.Mueller as to their recommendations concerning flashing in their containers.

there are flash-paks available using a gasket/pressure valve system rather than filters.can't use GENESIS pans for flash!

I never thought they were appropriate for use in flash cycles either but I was given a copy of a study that supposedly shows that a fully-sealed Genesis container can be safely flashed in a 4-minute prevacuum cycle. I wanted to know if anyone else had seen or heard of this study.

Did you get this study from the manufacturer? You need to find out specifically what cycles it was cleared for and only process in those parameters.

Check With Case Medical, They Have The Flash Containers.

You may want to contact Riley Medical and ask about the "Flashpak"...it is designed soley for this purpose and they have a free trial program.
I do believe they are a Class II

V. Mueller will provide you with their data about using the Genesis containers as a flash sterilization/transport device. I personally have issues with them...during a flash cycle, there is little or no dry time. Subsequently, the container (and its filters are wet after it comes out of the autoclave - not a good thing sterility speaking!! But - talk to your rep!!

3 companies offer trays that have been cleared for Flash Sterilization -
Riley Medical - Flash Pak
Case Medical - Special Flash Valve
Healthmark Ind - Flash Guard - cleared for 3 & 10 min Flash cycle.
Other container producers may have done studies which indicate thier effectiveness. However, they may not be cleared to market as Flash Sterilization trays with the FDA.
As for the 510K on "Flash Sterilization"

SSUSNICK:
I have a copy of those manufacturer's recommendations also. In the past three years, I have used this system one time in an emergency to flash something and then transport it to our ED.
Personally, I have a hard time with the moisture factor (both filters become moist) from flashing with the Genesis containers. However, the manufacturer does offer a written recommendation for this purpose and the filters are quite water resistant (fill one with water and watch how it holds the water) so I'll continue to use the Genesis containers to flash/transport in a pinch.
Our OR staff has decided not to use the Genesis containers as a flash sterilization transport system. They also didn't like the Case Medical or Riley products (which I think are both great products...).
JMHO. Have a great day.

Blaine, just out of curiosity, why does your O.R. not like the Riley Flash pack? We use those, and can transport in a closed container to point of use.

Those of you that have AAMI ST79, take a look at pages 68 and 69, Table 5 and Table 6. Both have guidelines for Flash sterilization using Gravity cycles and dynamic air removal cycles. Paragraphs 8.6.2.2 and 8.6.2.3 also have descriptions for Flash using Gravity and Dynamic Air removal cycles. Flash cycles has the expectation for wet loads. Using vacuum for Flash cycles avoids operator decisions regards porous exposure time and nonporous exposure times. Assuming the items to be Flashed are clean, don't see why a rigid container couldn't be used when little or no dry time was selected for the dynamic air removal cycle. Other Flash containers serve a useful purpose also.

We currently use the blue sterion container system that was originally put out by J&J. The question that I have is, are these suitable for OR flashing and if so what is the lenght of time that the instruments can be considered sterile? This is not the system that has the valve on it. I would appreciate your input.
